If my dear dad were alive . . .

. . . he would be flying the American flag this weekend and tomorrow.

He flew it on every patriotic holiday as long as I can remember.

He was a Marine during World War 2, and was getting ready to go 'fight some Japs' when Truman ordered the bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

Here is a cartoon that I think makes a point....
In other news, we're getting excited about the big event next Saturday.

Here's the happy couple playing one of their favorite games....
(They probably won't be sitting around playing that this week.)

Excitement builds!!

Most folks think ...

... that their garage sale is the best.

Well, they didn't go to April's!!

It was for THE WORLD RACE.
When did YOU go to a garage sale for THE WORLD RACE?

(Oh, sorry to shame you.)

Not only was it a garage sale. It was a cupcake sale....
(April made those cupcakes herself.)

And she sold stuff...

... lots of stuff.

It was all for her World Race trip starting January, 2011. She's going to be embarking on an 11-month mission trip to 11 different countries. You can join her in anticipation, prayer and support at

April Alvarado is really one of the most interesting and fun people I know.

Check out her website/blog.

And support her in prayer.

You go, April!!!!

Fun Fotos for Friday....

I just couldn't resist adding that last one of Andrew.
I think it needs a caption.
Any suggestions?
(I don't think he was wanting a hug.)

I hate this song...

. . . . "Me and Mrs. Jones"

I heard it on the radio yesterday.

I hate it.

Billy Paul sang it. And now Michael Buble has a version of it.

I hate it.

It's about an extramarital affair.

Since I'm thinking of weddings and marriages these days I thought I'd talk about this business of affairs.
(It's my blog - I get to talk about what I want.)

In the recent past - and in the faraway past - I've known people who have been devastated by affairs. The people who have the affairs are not the ones I'm talking about (though they usually end up devastated, too) ...I'm talking about the people left in the aftermath.
... the people left confused, swirling around not knowing how to 'be'.... (and sometimes even having to answer to those who blame them for not forgiving).

Ah but let me say this: I think no one is immune from committing adultery.
(No one is immune from anything, I think.)
(Yeah, I think we can all be pretty wretched deep down.)

Ah, but how does an affair start?
A flirt ... or someone looking at you a little longer than normal?
Is that how it starts?

However it starts, stop it.

I could say more but I won't.

Whoa. This blog is usually upbeat.

Well, I'll end it with good news....
We have a Savior.
When we're out drowning in the sea of awfulness, we don't have to be good enough to be saved.... Jesus comes down the ladder of our trying to be good enough ... and he saves us.

(I know, I used two metaphors that may not have worked together.....(drowning and ladder) .. oh well.... IT'S STILL A PROFOUND RELIEF. !!!!!!!!!)

Extreme makeover...

Before...(Yes, that is the world record on poke weed growth.)

Note to self: when you're taking pictures for before and after shots - stand in the same place --- especially in the same direction. (Oops.)

On a different note completely, I watched 24 last night, and thought it was great. Very satisfying.

I did not watch LOST, though, Sunday night. I quit watching after the 2nd season when I found out the writers didn't know where they were going. I said, 'Forgetaboutit.' It would be like if I found out my favorite mystery writer didn't know who-dun-it until the end of the book. I mean, the readers wouldn't know who'd dun it.... but the writer?
'Course I guess LOST wasn't a who-dun-it, but it WAS a mystery, don't you think?
I like mysteries being solved.
('Course I'm of the older generation.)

It seems weird talking about these shows in the past tense.
Well, that's my rant.
And my first extreme makeover.
I'll leave with a quote on marriage that I like (since weddings are on my mind).

"It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages."
- Friedrich Nietzsche

I also have 2 quotes on marriage in the sidebar that I like.

Have a great day.

Definitely a shower of blessing!

No, I didn't write who was who...

...but know this... they're all WONDERFUL.

(And that cake was MARVELOUS.)

When you've lived a long life...

... you have friends that go back a long time...
... and thanks to Facebook, you can get back in touch!

My dear friend Deanna and I hadn't seen each in 37 1/2 years... until yesterday!
Needless to say there was lots of catching up to do!

And as I told my husband later about her, I said, "I think she's one of the most interesting people I know!"
From 1982 till just recently (2007?) Deanna and her husband have lived in Cairo, Egypt (where her son was born); and Nigeria; and Singapore; and Quito, Ecuador; and Calgary, Alberta, Canada. (I may be missing a country or two.) Now they're back in Texas to take care of her mom.

Back in the fall of '70 she and I met and became part of a college singing group called CATCH THE SON (yes, that was the name). We wore matching dresses, took road trips, set up equipment, and just did what singing groups did back in that day... sing and play... and, as my parents found out, didn't study on our study-for-finals-days at Baylor.

Anyway, yesterday was so fun... catching up.

We met and ate at the tea room at the Montgomery Street Antique Mall in Fort Worth. And just so you know, the food was good... but not nearly as tasty as LoneStar's tea room's food! (No brag, just fact.)
After that, I ran home, got my mother-of-the-bride dress, possible jewelry combinations, shoes, etc., and took them over to Elizabeth's house to have her help me 'put my outfit together'. (I used to use her mom for those kinds of consultations. It's amazing I can get dressed by myself these days.)
Anyway, while there little Caroline wanted to take our picture. (I let her take pictures sometimes.) She said, "Mommy and Nancy, make a funny face." This is what she took....

(Elizabeth just cracks me up!)

Then Caroline said, "Take my picture as I look like this!"
Then she posed....

Life is fun.

And yesterday was GREAT fun!!!

There's this . . .

Time is going faster than it usually does.
I need it to quit that... and wait for me.

Seriously, I'm not ready for today to be May 20.

Nevertheless, I've been having fun these days.

I've had some mother/daughter time with my favorite daughter. :)

We've been out and about doing what people do before weddings. (Being decisive and then buying stuff)
Some people ask me, "Well, how's the mother of the bride doing?"
After I look around to see who they're talking to, I say something like, "Okay."
Then I think I'm supposed to be stressed.
That thought stresses me.
Like, maybe there's more to this than I'm thinking.
What am I missing?!
Then I begin my internal chatter that can go back to my fifth grade. At least my seventh grade: "What does everybody know about life that I don't know about?"

Ah, then I settle down after a little self-talk...

Then I breathe slowly... in ... and out...

And then I get on with my day.

That's what I'm doing now.

I'm convinced...

... that pictures ARE worth a thousand words...

This first one is of Ryan, with sweet Andrew, Caroline and little Sawyer ...
(We were at Bear Valley planning the wedding ceremony. The little ones put it in perspective - telling us that 'ceremony' is just fluff. What matters is LOVE.)

This next picture was taken at Will's first visit to the ER...
He was aggressively washing dishes at Bailey's house and severely cut his pinkie. (I think this may be the first time 'aggressive' and 'washing dishes' have been used in the same sentence.) :)
Fortunately he didn't have nerve damage... just six stitches-worth-of-damage.

This next picture was taken right before Ryan and Laura went to Plano for his 'pinning' for his nursing degree...He graduated the next morning from TWU.

Then that evening Bailey Jo graduated SUMMA CUM-LAUDE!!!!! from UTA.
This picture was taken at her celebration party last night.

I got to hold her precious little niece, Camryn, at the celebration party...She is so PRECIOUS.
I would say the little ones are the ones who make life PRECIOUS, wouldn't you?

I'm glad somebody invented cameras.

Happy Birthday, DADDY...

If my father were living, he'd be 85 today.

Here are some old pictures that I'm glad we have....

I was talking to my mom this afternoon and she said that he always helped her not only see the best in everything, but the funny in everything.

What a treasure he was.

(He died three and a half years ago.)

He was a "Micah 6:8 Man" for sure....

Micah 6:8
“He has showed you, O man, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.”

Happy Birthday, DADDY!
(Today marks a special day in so many ways.
Ryan, and Bailey, and Jason, and Kim, and Brad, and Aron, and Stacey, and others we know graduated - or are graduating tonight!!

Trivia Tuesday

The word “infant” is from the Latin for “unable to speak".
Ah, but that little baby speaks volumes, don't you think? 😊 ---------...
