Pressing PAUSE ...

I haven't blogged since Sunday...
but that's really not true.

I blogged a long post about Planned Parenthood and abortion.... but I didn't publish it.
And I had a post in my mind about the Iran nuclear deal... but didn't write it.
And before that there were potential blog posts about Caitlyn Jenner, and Donald Trump, and of course Hillary.

Now, though, I'm going to just breathe ... and not (over)think everything.

Since I can't completely stop thinking (as I told my parents when I was just a little girl) I need to choose what fills my mind.

A grief counselor told me years ago to think about places I'd been where I felt peaceful.
The first thing I thought about was sitting out on the back porch swing by myself in our house in Mission.
The next thing I thought about was walking into my Grandmother Ora's house.

I also think meditating on Scripture is super.
And memorizing Scripture, too, which is really meditating on it.

Here's a super passage from Psalms 62 ...
1 Truly my soul finds rest in God;
    my salvation comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.
I love that.

Oh, I'm not just sitting around thinking about ways to 'pause my life'... there are things to do and places to go, but I CAN let go of the hustle-bustle in my mind... and the worry in my mind... and I can 'pause my mind'.  (though i don't have to do it perfectly - even if I knew how to do that)

AND I can let go of trying to have a perfect blog-post.

That reminds me of this picture I found recently.
(It kills two birds with one stone.)
(It's a Throwback Thursday Pic for today ... AND it reminds me to not even think about trying to be perfect.)....
That was at a church service at Bear Valley years ago.
I love the words on the screen.
And I love the people on the stage.

That's all for today.

That's enough.

My Favorite Things ...

Here's something I got at 66% off at Hobby Lobby...

Anytime I see the word RELAX, I relax.
I also kind of collect exotic birds (not live ones),
so I liked that wall-hanging for multiple reasons.

And I got this lizard for 66% off at Hobby Lobby.
It's about 2 feet in length,
and fits well on our bedroom wall,
since we kind of have a tropical theme going in our apartment.

 Here's something I bought at a Ross store ...
I like its many messages...
And on Tuesdays people over 55 get a 10% discount at ROSS.
This next favorite thing didn't have a discount,
and doesn't hang on the wall (only around my waist).

Those are Dairy Queen's onion rings.
Sam ordered some the other day and I got to taste them.
Super yum.
Sam said they were about the best onion rings he's ever had.

Have you noticed that Dairy Queens have made a resurgence in metropolitan areas?
That's not a healthy thing,
but it is a yummy thing.

Finally, here are three of my favorite ONLY IN AMERICA sayings...

Only in America... do banks leave both doors open and then chain the pens to the counters.

Only in America... do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage.

Only in America... do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.

That's all for today.
I hope you have a great week!

Memories ... light the corners of my mind ...

... and they did Wednesday night!!!

That's when I met Kathleen McClain, whom I hadn't seen in over 45 years!!!
(We both graduated from Mission High School, in Mission, TX in 1970.)

We met at ...

in Hudson Oaks, TX, just east of Weatherford.
Kathleen had the catfish and I had the stuffed shrimp.
Sadly, I don't have access to my yearbook to show you our pictures back in 1970,
but you can imagine that we looked 45 years younger then.
(But we didn't feel 45 years older last night. Well, maybe we did.)

We talked and talked...
about the past,
and about what's been going in each of our lives in the last 45 years.

When we said good-bye I was almost hoarse.

How did we get connected after all those years?
My friend, Milner Duvall, called me a few weeks ago
and said he'd met a Missionite, Kathleen McClain.

So we got together...
and will again...
I think she's going to help me get my Peggy-book finished finally!
(Kathleen is a writer, an editor of various newspapers through the years,
and well, an overall great journalist.)
She offered to edit the book!
And that is super ...
especially since she knew dear Peggy!!

(If you're reading this blog for the first time,
Peggy was my twin, and only sibling.
She died at the age of 37.
I've been working on a book about her, and about being a twin,
and have set it aside too many times.
NOW it is time to get it finished!!!

In other news,
I've been playing that song I referenced in my blog-post title,
from "The Way We Were,"
lately in the antique mall tea room.
Well, it's an old song that Barbra Streisand made famous,
but then I play a lot of antique songs.

I had thought the first lyrics were 'Mem'ries, LIKE the corners of my mind.'
The memories LIGHT the corners of my mind.
(I think that's pretty descriptive.)

So if  you long to hear some old tunes like "Deep Purple," "Star Dust,"
Floyd Cramer's "Last Date," and even "She'll Be Comin' Around the Mountain,"
well, come to the tea room!
(My schedule is HERE.)
(You'll need to go to the 'calendar'.)

I might be wearing an outfit from Betty Jane's Boutique...
which soon will be right next to the tea room!
I bought that at Betty Jane's a few months ago.
I've gotten lots of compliments on it!
(Betty Jane's is inside LoneStar Antiques, 5605 Denton Highway, Haltom City.)
(The outside isn't too impressive... but the inside is!)
(It's an old Sutherland's home-building store.)

In closing, here's one of my absolute favorite quotes ...
"Make time for Quiet Moments
as God whispers
and the world is loud."

Wednesday's Wandom (that's 'random' with a 'W')

1. Anxious people may want to eat more pickles.
In last month's USA TODAY they had an article about that.  I thought it was interesting.
You can click HERE for that article.

Pickles are known for other good things.  Laura's kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Foster, strongly believed that eating lots of dill pickles kept her from getting colds.  (I had never heard that before, have you?)  Needless to say at Christmas time Mrs. Foster got lots of jars of dill pickles from her students.
2. On a different note, I babysat my little granddaughter last night.  Wow, she is really mastering the hand motions to some children's songs.  If I knew how to put a video on this blog (other than a youtube video) I so would.
Instead I'll put a picture of her at Disney World from last week.
I have a lot more pictures that Bailey shared with me,
but I may show them to you later.
(I'm tempted to show them ALL to you now,
but, then, I'm her grandmother.)

3.  On a MUCH different note, I'm thinking I need to detach from any news about Donald Trump. He just irks me too much. (Of course that is his agenda, I think: irking people that already feel irked.) (That sentence made sense to me.)

4. On still a different note,  I've added a new blog to my list of blog posts I like (on the right panel of this blog).  It's ADVANCED STYLE.  It mainly just shows pictures of older ladies looking spiffy.  Today's or yesterday's picture I don't like super much.
But here's one I do like...
That lady was turning 70 when she had that picture made.
Don't worry. I won't pose like that... I don't think.

(If you scroll down on that blog you'll see a blue-haired lady -
I won't ever do that ... I don't think.)

5. Finally, I'm going west of Fort Worth today to meet up with an old friend from Mission.  I'll blog about that soon.  We haven't seen each other in over 45 years so we have a lot to catch up on.
Wow. I AM getting old when I can write a sentence like that last one.  Whoa.

I'll close with this cartoon ...

Some Quality Super-Deluxe Family Time!!!

We had some family fun this weekend!

My iPhone camera stayed in my purse... where it didn't belong.

Ah, but I finally got some pictures last night...
You can tell who came to have some crazy fun!
(from left: the Huffman family from Southlake TX,  Sandy and David from Marshalltown, Iowa;  Sam (now) from North Richland Hills, TX;  Mother-Margaret from Bedford, TX;  Jim and Carol from Nashville, TN, and Uncle Warren (Mother's little brother) from Tullahoma, TN.
(We so missed Aunt Helen who was back in Tullahoma holding down the fort.)

We had pizza from Pizza Hut (my fave)... and for dessert? We had rhubarb pie that Uncle Warren made, from the rhubarb that Dave and Sandy brought from their garden in Iowa.

Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream wasn't available so we had ...
And yes, it was extra creamy. Mm.

We put the pie and the ice cream together...
And they went fast!

This IS the year of the J. Earl White reunion, but for various reasons we didn't schedule one.... well, until Uncle Warren and my mom wanted to get together anyway.
Warren's son (my cousin) "Tennessee Jim" and his wife '"Tennessee Carol'" flew Warren down.... and "Iowa David" and "Iowa Sandy" joined us!

Friday night we did our usual El Fenix (we've (they've) been going for decades - even before I was born), and we had some good visiting, and getting caught up.... and well, it was delicious Tex-Mex, of course.

Saturday night we went to Central Market to hear Bailey Jo's mom (and sister Shea!) perform... and so Warren and the rest could meet Bailey Jo's talented family.  (I should have had my camera out! Truth is I was so interested in all the conversation and fun time that I didn't think of anything else (like taking a picture.))  (Bailey, Will and Nell were at Disney World - so they were celebrating there.)

On Thursday night (the first night) we had sandwiches in Mother's apartment ... and well, it was an absolutely wonderful time. Uncle Warren asked us to tell about what we'd learned from our fathers.  Whoa. That got us to all thinking, and reminiscing, and smiling, and sometimes getting a little teary.  It was awesome.  I will never forget it.

On Sunday, Uncle Warren, Jim and Carol went over to Dallas to see the old sites....
That was one of their homes in Oak Cliff.
(That's where I remember going ... and loving it.)
(It looked better back in the 60's)
Warren, Jim and Carol also went to other places, like where Warren and Helen were married (at Rosemont Christian Church)....
Ah, but here's where Warren and Helen had their very first date ....
That's Warren and Carol in front of the El Fenix in Oak Cliff.

And here's Warren sitting in the very booth that he and Helen sat in on their very first date!
I'm thinking that menu is not the same menu?

For those of you in the J. Earl White gang that weren't here, know this: in February (weather permitting) we're having a 90th birthday party for my mom, Margaret.  It will probably be February 6th.  Keep that date open, okay?
And the same goes for the McElhany group (my dad's sister's group)... mark your calendar for February 6th!
Oh, and of course for the immediate Sam Carmack group (Sam, Nancy, Will, Bailey Jo, Nell, SWC VII, and Laura and Ryan Maxwell): Mark your calendars.

In closing I'm going to show you a J.Earl White reunion picture from 1990...
(you can click it to make it a little larger)...
That was at Warren and Helen's house in Tullahoma, TN, in 1990.

Isn't that a great-looking family?

So this weekend was a much smaller (and kind of impromptu) gathering...
but oh it was quality time spent.

This morning Mother and I talked about how we will relive this weekend in our minds
for a long time.

I've been smiling all morning all day.

Dust, and a boutique move... and some WHIMSY!!!

The piano I play in the Antique Mall tea room (SimpliciTeas Tea Room) has been getting unusually dusty lately, so Emily and Gabbie have been dusting it a lot!...
Thanks, sweet ladies!!!

So why is there excess dust?!
Well, there's a good reason.
Betty Jane's Boutique, which has been near the back of the antique mall,
is moving to right next to the tea room.

Here's owner Ronnie getting high on it....

And here's Ronnie and Ben taking a break to pose for my picture...
Ronnie said that it should be ready Monday (as in July 20th - whoa)!

Those of us who have booths on the way to the (old) boutique are thinking of ways to get boutique customers to still walk by our booths now.

I'm thinking I could make a sign:
with an arrow pointing our way.
(My niece Elizabeth has a blue pillow in our booth.)

Well, that IS an idea!!!

In related 'news'
here is some LoneStar Whimsy,
which you can see (and buy) before or after eating in the SimpliciTeas Tea Room!

Come by and shop and eat at LONESTAR ANTIQUES.
It is at 5605 Denton, Highway, Haltom City, TX.

(And it's air conditioned!)

A whole new experience ...

I had a new experience yesterday
- and Mother did, too -
because I don't think she'd been trapped before yesterday.

On the hottest day so far of the year,
we found ourselves trapped in a hot elevator!!!

It happened at Mother's retirement center, on the only elevator in her building.

It felt like an hour in there,
but I really think it was 20 minutes,
maybe 10,
or an hour and a half!

Fortunately Mark, the director, was with us.

The reason the director was in there was because the elevator had broken down earlier,
but was fixed, he assured us. Then he said he would go with us in it to get to the first floor.
We three walked in.. Mark hit 1 for the first floor.

We didn't know how long we'd be stranded.
I had printed off a 40% off coupon from Hobby Lobby on a 8x11 in. piece of paper.
That became our fan.

I fanned Mother with it... and myself... and Mark.
Back and forth.
Back and forth.

Finally, on his cell-phone Mark got a hold of Carlos,
one of the maintenance/repair men at Parkwood.

Carlos came and somehow pried the doors open.
Unfortunately we were between the first and second floors!

Here's Carlos holding the doors, and Mark...
getting ready to hoist me up - with Carlos' help...
and then they hoisted Mother up.
(Of course blogging was on my mind.)

I didn't get a picture of the hoisting,
but I got a picture of the relief...

I'm hoping the elevator works now.
(I'm out-of-town, and haven't talked to Mother about it yet.)

By the way, a brand new elevator IS coming soon!

(Hopefully REALLY SOON .... Mother is expecting company REALLY SOON!!)

In closing, here's an elevator cartoon I found ...

Sunday Summary ...

It's hot today!

In other news, we went to our nephew Rob's church this morning.
As usual, Rob had a fantastic message for us.
(There are few communicators as effective as Rob.)
(I'm so glad he's letting God use him in such a wonderful way.)
His church is a very exciting place to be.

Here he is with his precious wife, Caroline ...

Their little girl, Delia, is three years old TODAY!!!

Here she is telling me how old she is ...
She's three!!!

I forgot to get a picture of her big brother this morning, so I'm going to steal this from FB...
They're happy, beautiful kids.
(Of course they would be.)

We (Rob, Caroline, I and others) think Delia looks like her first cousin-once-removed, Laura...
That's Laura.
And here's Delia...
Well, they're almost 26 years apart now...
but you can tell they're Carmacks!!

In other news,
we saw our granddaughter today...
Her Daddy Pap sure loves his little Nell.
(Some Carmacks have brown hair.)

I took some more pictures of her, of course...

I think she and her dress are stunning!

In other news,
we have a new cousin!!

She's Corinne...
and she's my kids' second cousin-once-removed.
(I'm thinking she's my first-cousin-twice-removed)...

Well, she's my Aunt Helen's first great grandchild!!...
That's my Aunt Helen's first grandchild, Wes, with his new daughter.
Isn't she DARLING?!!

Mother and I have sent her some unique onesies!!
That is Laura's artwork on those onesies!!!

I think Corinne is going to be the only baby in north Texas with those onesies.
(They're so special.)

You can order Laura's art on all kinds of products,
by clicking HERE, or HERE, or HERE, or HERE
Yes, that's four HEREs!!!
(I've never known anyone who has had four heres before!)

In closing,
here is some more of Laura's art...
You can order it by clicking one of those four HEREs up there.

I hope you have a great week.
