Why did I go gray?

Many years ago I knew a brown-haired lady who went on a very long vacation. When she came back, she was gray-haired!
I remember thinking: she looks 20 years older. I will NEVER let myself do that. I will keep my brown-hair brown. I will NOT let myself look so much older.

Fast forward 30 years.
I let myself go gray.
I wanted to!

I went gray mainly because I wanted to, but also because my kids and husband encouraged me (when I suggested I might try it). Plus my piggy bank and my calendar encouraged me.

I used to get this done...
That's Marti after giving me some brown.

Then she started highlighting my hair, to get it ready for the gray to grow out.
Actually getting my hair done to this extent was nice.
It was a relaxing time, though expensive.

Anyway I decided to go gray.... because I WANTED TO.

There is a double standard out there, surely you know.
Ladies who color their gray need to get it colored more often than younger women who go blonde.
This point is made in these pictures.

You see that?
Well, of course, older ladies are not as pretty as younger ladies, so their color changes would be not as pretty as younger ladies' changes.

Life is not fair.

Getting older is getting older.

I have decided I'm going to embrace it.
My grandmothers did. And they were wonderful.

Well, they may have wished to be younger. I don't know.
But I do know that they just let themselves go (gray).. and if that meant 'older', well, so be it.

I like growing older.
It beats the alternative.

If you haven't checked out my new book about my twin sister - who died at age 37 - please do.

Peggy did not get to grow older.
I am just glad I did.

And though gray hair DOES age a person, I have decided that I am okay.

Mother and me - good old ladies

Here's a picture I like - which represents a special event...
That's my son, my mother, and my husband.
They are celebrating Mother's 93rd birthday last Sunday evening.
Would that I would look that good when I get to be 93!

She is really classy, isn't she?

In other (somewhat similar) news, my granddaughter and I were sitting together in our living room chair last Tuesday. She turned to me and said, "Grammy, you smell good."
"Why, thank you, Nell," I said.
Then she said, "Old ladies smell good."
Well, smelling good IS good.

Later we talked about the letter they've been working on her preschool this week. It's 'Q'.
Nell said that her teacher told the class she had a quilt at home, and that the word quilt started with 'Q'.
Nell said she told her teacher that her grammy had a quilt at HER home.

So I smell good and I have a quilt. Actually I have a few quilts.
I'm a good old lady.

That's all for today.
Have a great rest-of-the-week!
